Silverthorne town is situated centrally in Summit County, CO. It sits between the Gore Range to the west and the Continental Divide to the east. The two most visible mountains are Buffalo and the Red Mountains. Ptarmigan, Tenderfoot, and Ten Mile Peaks are also surrounding the valley. The town has a total area of 3.2 square miles and is the second most populous town in Summit County, CO.
The elevation rises to 9,035 feet above the sea level.
The town was named for judge Marshall Silverthorn,
who served as the judge of the miner’s court in Breckenridge.
Marshall Silverthorn came to town as a prospector in 1881. Unfortunately, he discovered that the gold in the area was sparse. His claimed land of the Blue River was inherited by his daughter, later to be only sold multiple times to mining companies. Clayton Hill bought the property in 1953 and subdivided it for homes and stores.
The town of Silverthorne became a popular worker camp while the Dillon Reservoir was built. Later on, it was a great stop along I-70.
