Join us for an unforgettable kickoff to our DÍA DE MUERTOS celebration at the Old Masonic Hall – and it’s absolutely FREE! Breck Create invites you to a two-day commemoration of the Day of the Dead, where we weave together art, music, and dance in a joyful celebration of our departed loved ones.
Step into our inspiring campus and explore two incredible exhibitions. First, immerse yourself in Stephanie Mercado’s The Seeds of Dreams, a heartfelt tribute to the vibrant Latine communities of Summit County, Colorado. Then, don’t miss Evangelina Estes’ Mi Casa Es Su Casa, a magical transformation of Breck Create’s retrofitted 1975 Airstream trailer into a traditional Mexican family kitchen.
The evening’s schedule is packed with engaging experiences:
- 5:30 PM: Live music featuring the soulful melodies of guitarist Javier de los Santos.
- 6:00 PM: Engage with our talented artists as they share their creative insights during an artists’ talk.
- 7:00 PM: Immerse yourself in the ancient traditions of Día de Muertos with the Huitzilopochtli Aztec Dance and Candlelight Vigil. This moving candlelight vigil beckons departed spirits to return to Earth for a brief visit, a time of remembrance, sacred tradition, love, and community unity.
Dr. Renee Fajardo of MSU Denver will enlighten us on the ceremonial importance of Día de Muertos, while attendees light candles to carry during the procession led by the Aztec dance group Huitzilopochtli through the Arts District Campus. Feel free to bring pictures or tokens of your loved ones to be a part of this meaningful journey.
The evening culminates in the traditional danza of Quetzalcóatl, the god of air and wisdom, who often takes the form of a plumed serpent. This ancient deity symbolizes death and resurrection, with ties to dawn, the morning star, and Venus. The Mayans and Aztecs believed he had resurrected humankind from the underworld with his own blood. Don’t miss this incredible opening night, a tribute to tradition and a celebration of life.
