Breckenridge is a historic town located in Summit County, Colorado. It is seated right at the base of the Tenmile Range of High Rocky Mountains.
The mountain boasts 5 peaks and 2908 skiable acres to explore, but it’s the town that makes Breckenridge so special. Not only full of history and character, but Breckenridge has an incredibly laid-back charm that makes you feel like a local – no matter the season.
From world class skiing to extraordinary Main Street, what unites both locals and visitors in Breckenridge is a shared passion for the outdoors and the lifestyle this destination has to offer.
Only 1.5 h driving from Denver with DIA (Denver International Airport) Breckenridge is a popular destination choice amongst Front Range residents and many out-of-state visitors.
The elevation rises to 9,600 feet above the sea level.
George E. Spencer was an American politician and US senator from the State of Alabama. With the intent of finding some gold, he relocated to Colorado during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush and as a result, he founded the town of Breckenridge.
Most of all, Spencer’s aim was to flatter the government and therefore, he named it originally “Breckinridge” after John C. Breckinridge of Kentucky, Vice President of the United States.
However, after the outbreak of Civil War, Spencer should have named the new place after himself. The former vice president had more sympathy with the South and as a result, US Senate expelled Breckinridge for treason.
The embarrassed little town of Breckinridge quickly and quietly changed the spelling of its name to “Breckenridge,” changing an “i” to an “e”.
This stunning town became a popular ski town in December 1961 when the first mountain trails were created. The lower part of Peak 8 was where the first few trails were cut and Ski Hill Road connected it to the town. Consequently, in the last 50 years, Breckenridge ski resort gradually expanded onto Peak 9 and Peak 10 on the south end of town, and Peak 7 and Peak 6 to the northwest of town.
Breckenridge quickly gained its reputation for prestige skiing and became one of the most popular skiing resorts in North America. 5 different mountain Peaks offer over 180 skiing runs from beginner to advanced terrain. Everyone will find something for themselves.
Moreover, Breckenridge Ski Resort boasts the highest chairlift in entire North America – the Imperial Express SuperChair. The lift will take you to 12,840 feet above the sea level, where you are only 100 feet away from the very top of Peak 8.
