Nestled on the shores of Lake Dillon, Dillon Colorado is a central Rocky Mountain town. Within a 45 minute radius, you will get to seven world-class ski resorts. The town has a total area of 2.4 square miles and is by Dillon Dam and its reservoir. The continental divide is approximately 10 miles (16 km) east.
The elevation rises to 9,111 feet above the sea level.
The town was named for Tom Dillon,
a prospector, and was incorporated in 1883.
In the late 1800s, the town of Dillon was located at what is now the deepest spot in Lake Dillon. The town was originally built as a trading post and at that time a fair amount of cabins were already established.
However, in the late 1950s all of the homeowners and business owners had to relocate due to the upcoming construction of the Dam. The front range needed water storage in the high country and the reservoir was built in place of the original town and became known as Lake Dillon. The current townsite sits now on the shoreline of Dillon Reservoir.
The recreational skiing really boomed in the late 1960s which made Dillon a popular location for seasonal ski resorts workers.
